Signal boosting tonight’s (Monday) scheduled community rewatch of Identity Crisis, which will begin at 9 PM EASTERN/6 PM PACIFIC. I get to be the soap.
elrhiarhodan: (Default)
I really, really can't believe that this is the season finale. My stomach is churning, my heart is racing. STUFF WILL HAPPEN.

I'm going to take a moment, here above the cut, to reflect a bit on the past three years. My deep and endless involvement (a mild word) with the White Collar fandom began a little more than three years ago. Just as the second half of the first season was getting started, I was laid up and bored and in pain (sounds familiar, eh?). The only thing I could do with my right arm was move the mouse. I came across this blog post, and discovered the world of slash fan fiction. (Yes, I've told this story many times before).

Three years, and a million words of fanfic later, I have found something extremely precious: a community of talented and like-minded women who aren't afraid to express themselves. While I've been lucky enough to meet a few of you in "meat/meet" space, I hold many of you close to my heart. If White Collar has given me with anything - it is this: friendships that are defined by the generosity of spirit.

I'm just feeling a bit sentimental. The coming Saturday marks the third anniversary of my first (and somewhat awful) fanfic - How Long Did You Think You Could Keep This Up (Before I Found Out)?. Looking at it now, I'm startled to see how many people who commented there are still active in fandom. And how many of those commenters I now consider my friends. (So, maybe it wasn't so awful after all?)

We're about fifteen minutes out, I need to refresh my beverage, get settled in and try not to start hyperventilating.

Do I have to really remind anyone that there are spoilers under the cut by now? )
elrhiarhodan: (Default)
Hard to believe, but just two episodes to go until this season's over. It started out with half-naked Neal in an exotic location, painting unreasonable forgeries and seducing the local cafe owner with his charm and wit.

We've come a long way from James Maine and Barry Sotoro on the beach in Cape Verde (or the very lovely Puerto Rico, as a stand-in). Peter's brought him home and managed to nearly lose his job (again). He survived time in The Cave, surviving on gourmet sandwiches in The Yard hand delivered by his once and future CI (best friend and idee fixe), only to regain his job and nearly lose Neal in the process.

This has been a season of too much false drama and tension between Neal and Peter and as it draws to a close, I hope - I think we all hope that despite Peter's assertion that there will always be secrets between him and Neal, there will at least be trust and faith.

I think we've seen that, to a certain extent. Peter, though clearly dismayed at Neal's bald-faced lie, decided NOT to fly off the handle, but to give Neal his head, let him take the lead. To trust him to do the right thing for the right reasons.

The last three episodes have been flawed - but their flaws are not, I believe, endemic to a maturing series. Too much time apart for Peter and Neal, not enough focus on Neal, not enough focus on the friendship that made us fall in love with White Collar in the first place. Apparently there are good reasons for this - we had Tim DeKay's limited participation in Brass Tacks as he prepped for directing Empire City and then spent a lot of his time behind the camera for that episode. And while Shoot the Moon returned the show to good form, Neal was strangely absent for much of the episode. That was not without reason - according to showrunner, Jeff Eastin, he needed to give Matt a few weeks with a diminished role. Matt was committed to the press tour for Magic Mike and flying back to Los Angeles every week, and he was burning out.

So yeah, it wasn't our imaginations. And I'm inclined to think more highly of these episodes knowing that. As much as I love Matt and love Neal - he's a human being and a seventy-hour work week plus non-stop publicity is a bad combination.

Anyway, you're probably asking yourselves - what's the deal with all these thinky thoughts before the cut? Well, I'm not feeling too good tonight, and I've decided that while I don't want to miss doing the dish - I'm going to leave my episode reactions for tomorrow. I still want to give you a place to park your thoughts and comments.

Okay?

There will be spoilers under the cut, but not tonight. There's still stuff under the cut, though. Definitely worth taking a look. )

Post-Ep Dish - 4.14 - Shoot the Moon

After two less-than-stellar episodes (though both were better on re-watch than when originally aired), I was beginning to have my doubts about the direction of White Collar. Elizabeth was no longer behaving like a Stepford Wife, thank goodness, but she was definitely channeling something equally unwholesome and out of character. The trust issues driving Peter and Neal apart felt weirdly fabricated and it was more like these guys really didn't care about each other (no spending hours at the hospital bedside was definitely a lost opportunity) than they were good friends who'd do anything for each other.

But I have to say, after watching Shoot the Moon, my faith in White Collar has been restored. So, here we go, my friends, after a week's hiatus, it's time for the Post-Ep Dish.

Everything under the cut is a spoiler. You've Been Warned. )
elrhiarhodan: (Default)
And it's time for another episode of the White Collar Post-Ep Dish. This week, we've got Empire City, directed by our very own Tim DeKay, who hit it out of the park with last year's Stealing Home (sorry about the pun).

There's supposed to be a lot to love about this episode, but for the spoiler-phobes out there, you'll have to click through...

Here we go, spoilers under the cut. )

Hiya folks and welcome to the 2013 Edition of the White Collar Post Ep Dish.

Due to circumstances beyond my control (and a week-long hospital stay), I wasn’t able to do the Dish for last week’s mid-season premier, Family Business, but I do have to say I loved it. Even the week caper had its undeniable charms. Both [livejournal.com profile] jrosemary and [livejournal.com profile] rabidchild67 did excellent reviews (First Thoughts and Rabid Squee, respectively). I suggest you head on over to White Collar Fixation and check out their reviews.

I have to admit, I am exhausted, so this Dish this week is a short collection of mostly random thoughts. I have high hopes for the episode, particularly since we’ve got ...

Cut for spoilers )
elrhiarhodan: (Default)
Sigh … seems like Season 4 just started, and now it's on break until some time in January. If it starts up again in the second week of the new year, we're looking at about 120 days without White Collar. At least it's better than the 200-plus days that we were left hanging about El last year.

Thank you all to your contributions to the Dish-less Dish last week. I've read them all, and time permitting, I'll respond to them soon-ish.

Because last week was so crazy, I've gone into this episode pretty unspoiled, but with high-ish hopes. Not only for a resolution of Neal's anger with Peter, but at being Kripked. One of the very first fics I wrote involved the industry that Peter and Neal are investigating. Of course, Peter and Neal and Elizabeth aren't involved in a polyamorous relationship and it wasn't Peter's twin sister who brought the case to their attention, but it does involve (okay - won't say, since it's above the cut).

And now - the DISH!

Of course, spoilers galore under the cut. Of the four mid-season finales, I'm going to rate this one ... )
elrhiarhodan: (Default)
Folks - no Dish tonight. I'm too tired and I have too much left to do (moving day tomorrow).

I love you all, and would love if you parked a few thoughts here ... just so I can get your bits of joy during the day.
elrhiarhodan: (Default)
I find it really hard to believe that the first half of the season (mathematically speaking) is over. Wasn’t it just yesterday that I was working on the episode tag to Wanted? And that Labor Day has come and gone is blowing my mind. As I just said to [livejournal.com profile] jrosemary (of White Collar Fixation fame), life is going way, way, way too fast these days.

I actually had NO expectations about this episode - I think after last week’s bravura performances, any hype would have fallen flat. But Ancient History was, by and large, a solid episode with a strong caper. Maybe the strongest in several seasons.

All you non-spoilerphobes can check below the cut for my thoughts on why I give this episode a solid 7 out of 10. )
elrhiarhodan: (Default)
It seems that I’m in a rather tetchy mood tonight. My elbow is killing me - arthritis anyone (Hell, I’m too young for that) - and it seemed to have affected my mood earlier tonight. In my usual ramp-up conversation with [livejournal.com profile] jrosemary (of White Collar Fixation fame) before the episode, I was pretty damn down on this episode.

I think my expectations were based on the closing scene in Honor Among Thieves, where Elizabeth asks Peter if he thinks Neal’s been running a long con on him. As [livejournal.com profile] rabidchild67 noted in her Rabid Squee for that episode, it smacked of sloppy writing and poor character development. I was afraid we were in for a full episode of misplaced mistrust and Season 2 and Season 3 bad behavior.

I was wrong.

And for the non-spoilerphobes, you can check below the cut for all the reasons why )

Week Six - Identity Crisis

We’re back with another edition of the Post Ep Dish. I do have to say that my decision to do the write up after the episode is over (rather than just randomly squee during the airing) has been a wise one. I finally get to enjoy the story as it unfurls.

Anyway, as always, there are major spoilers under the cut… So spoilerphobes go away! )
elrhiarhodan: (Default)
And we’re back for Week Five. Has anyone figured out why it was preempted (and why most first run shows were preempted) last week? There was nothing particularly special on the Olympics (I had thought that maybe it was the round-ball finals, but I was wrong).

So - counting down ... 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 … Houston, we have lift off!

(And lift-off’s completely staged, I’m not doing the Dish as a live squee anymore.)

Spoilers under the cut, as per usual )
elrhiarhodan: (Neal - Balls (S4))
Doing the dish a little differently this week.

I finally realized something - after nearly three seasons of Dishing, that I don't get the chance to enjoy the episode as it airs because I'm trying to capture my thoughts about it in real time. So I miss a lot...and that's no fun. I've looked over the responses to this Dish, and tbh, most of them don't start coming in until 11 pm or midnight, hours after the show's ended.

So - going forward, since I since I DVR the episode anyway and can rewatch it immediately, I'm going to stop the real time squeeing, focus on enjoying the episode, and THEN formulate my thoughts, okay???

But in the interim, if you do want to get the ball rolling, please feel free to start your comments and add your thoughts, thinky or otherwise.

Of course there are now spoilers under the cut. Major ones, fun ones. More thinky thoughts than flaily squee. )
elrhiarhodan: (S4 - Peter -(Magnifying Glass))
Well, here we are, three weeks into the season, and we’re back to New York, with some interesting developments. Peter’s being punished, so our boys are still not together. And Mozzie, wherefore art thou?

What I don’t understand is why is Storage Wars winning the timeslot? I mean, I like the show, it’s kind of fun, but WTF? Who the hell would rather watch those bags full of ugly than Peter and Neal. NOT ME!

You know, I never responded to anyone’s comments last week. Wednesday turned out to be kind of nuts, Thursday was almost as bad, and you gals were playing to nice together that I didn’t need to step in. I hope to do better this week. I love you and I love our conversations.

And I hope to finish the comfort side of Six Hours to Freedom this week.

Once again, this mostly going to be incoherent flailing, but there's a time and a place for everything. Later tonight, head over to White Collar Fixation for [personal profile] jrosemary's incisive First Look at Diminishing Returns, and [personal profile] rabidchild67's ever brilliant Rabid Squee on Thursday. [/pimpage]

And here we go!

So MANY major spoilers are under the cut, naturally )

Okay - so you know the drill. Please park your thinky and not-so-thinky thoughts, your raves and squees and bits of utter happiness.

It’s finally next week. Finally! This one is going to be a wild, wild ride.

Most Wanted is especially Most Wanted

Anyway, welcome my friends to the Season 4 version of the Post-Ep Dish, where I squee in real time, then you get to chime in and continue the conversation.

elrhiarhodan: (Neal - Dice Tropical)
Can’t believe it, here we are, ready to start Season 4, and it looks like it's going to be a doozy! All signs are pointing to a better relationship between our boys, an interesting mythology alongside the usual capers.

Are you ready? I know I am. It’s funny - it feels like S3 just ended. Maybe because of the long, LONG interval we had between the front and back half of Season 3 (about twice as long as the interval between Season 3 and 4.

Anyway, welcome my friends to the Season 4 version of the Post-Ep Dish, where I squee in real time, then you get to chime in and continue the conversation.

I love the poster for Season 4, but I'm not sure that it's a new picture. The pose and positioning of Matt's hands looks almost identical to the semi-profiles in the "Chose a Side" campaign for Season 3.

What say you?
