I was a junior in high school and my mom let me join the Paperback Book of the Month Club as a reward for my good grades. My sister had gotten the Columbia Record Club deal, and I used to get a few choices from their bounty ever few months or so. But the PBBOTMC was all mine. And the starter pack was like ten books. I remember getting my own set of LOTR, a copy of The Timelines of History, The Dictionary of Philosophy and Religion, and this book, The Arbor House Treasury of Modern Science Fiction. Mostly because I pretty much loved everything that Robert Silverberg wrote.

I still have this book, and occasionally riffle through it, rereading favorite stories (And All the Seas With Oysters, The Great Moveway Jam). I also still have the original copy of The Timelines of History (it was so very useful in university classes, as was The Dictionary of Philosophy and Religion, which turned out to have been written by a professor in the Philosophy department at SUNY-Albany, where I did my undergrad degree! That book was really only useful for solving crossword clues, sadly.
