Probably because of the artwork. None of the rest of the Shannara books ever captured my interest. Terry Brooks has apparently just published the last one last year. He wrote The Sword of Shannara in 1977, the year Star Wars came out.

I really wanted to love the rest of the Shannara series. I remember when the second book had been announced - there was a poster for "Elfstones of Shannara" in the local B. Daltons, and I kept haunting the store, every weekend. No one at the store had any idea of the actual publication date, and I'd call DAW every few weeks begging for information. I think this was '80 or '81. So I was 15 or 16, totally an obsessed fangirl. And when I finally got my hands on it? Devoured it in two days. What a disappointment. I don't think I even tried to read any of the books that followed. In retrospect, if I found this when all of the other stories had come out, I probably would have considered this the weakest of every one of the books, but 12 year old me loved it sooooo unconditionally.
