I can't believe that we're going to be Doing It In D.C. in less than five days!
(runs around like a mad woman, waving her hands in the air)
Anyways, some housekeeping and whatnot...
1 - Arrivals.
Peeps will be mostly arriving on Friday afternoon, although I know that a few have commented about coming in late on Thursday, too. I'm leaving House Wonderful early, will be stopping in James Rebhorn country to pick up a friend and barring hellacious traffic (always a distinct possibility on a Friday), I should be arriving some time mid-to-late afternoon. Probably, hopefully (send up a prayerforme) by three pm.
A few people have asked how we'll know where to gather. That's a very good question. I would like peeps to PM me with their email addresses and real names (you're going to have to share them eventually, right?), so on my arrival, I can send everyone an email with my room number.
2 - Festivities.
A. Writing. In talking with
rabidchild (I'm mentioning her by name, so you know who to blame), she came up with the brilliant idea of having a "brackets" type of writing competition. It works like this:
Over the weekend, those who want to participate will sign up and be randomly assigned brackets (and I promise, they will be random. I'm bringing a hat). You and your bracket challenger will go head-to-head in a writing competition with a theme for the round, and a prompt for the bracket pairing. The number of signups will help determine the number of rounds.
You will have a half hour to write a story.
Your story will be sent to a non-participant administrator, who will strip out your identifying details and send it to the bracket judges. Each bracket will have one judge to read two stories and pick a winner for that bracket/round. So - if there are 6 brackets, there will be 6 judges.
There will be a variety of themes and one will be picked from Neal's hat for each round, used and then discarded.
Themes will include: Love & Romance, Hurt/Comfort, Tropes, Relationships (including Porn), Alternative Universes, Episode Tags (and probably a few others).
Prompts will be Genre Specific and some will be prepared in advance, and some will be contributed before the round begins.
For people who can't make it to the festivities but still want to participate, the way to do that is by signing up to be a judge. The writing will occur at a set time (schedule to be created), and if you are playing along remotely, you'll have to commit to being available at a time certain.
There will be separate sign-up posts for the writers and for the judges. And that post will have more detailed rules.
FWIW, This isn't the only writing we'll do - I'm hoping for a round of round-robins and basic word warring, too.
B. Museums. One of the reasons for picking the DC area is to be able to pretend to case the National Gallery (and other museums). The good news is that the Government is back to pretending it's working on behalf of its citizens and the Smithsonian is open. In case you didn't know, admission to all of the Smithsonian galleries is free. So, even if we don't steal like Neal, it still won't cost us anything to look.
On Friday, we'll decide whether to go on Saturday or Sunday. We'll figure out transportation - via Metro, of course. There's also the Spy Museum, which I don't think is part of the Smithsonian, but some people have expressed an interest.
C. Food and Beverage. Let's operate under the KISS principle and keep it simple, stupid. There's a Wegman's within shouting distance of the hotel and we can sort out pizza and other stuff. Anyone who wants to bring goodies is more than welcome to. All comestibles are appreciated.
3 - Other Things. My four seasons of White Collar DVDs are already in my laptop bag.
embroiderama has promised to bring a DVD player that we can hook up to the hotel room's television.
It looks like we're going to be a lot of people. I had inquired with the hotel about meeting space, but at $300 a day, it didn't reasonable. So, we'll float between rooms (I took a two-room suite just so peeps will have a place to hang without dealing with my dirty laundry) and do our best to keep the noise down and not get kicked out.
Am I missing anything?
If you're coming, please comment below, just so we know to expect you. Don't forget to PM me with your email address, too. And I guess, if you've PM'd me, you don't need to comment, right? You know what, comment anyway.
Tosses her hands in the air like a teenager and says, "whatever".
And the promised Bonus Bomer...
