I too don't think it would be at all plausible for Neal to accept James as a father figure - or even a person he could respect. Not only was the man's absence in his life for 30 years inexplicable, as Sam, he's manipulated Neal over and over again.
There's so much more I find myself wanting to say about this character - not to explain motivation, but the reactions to things he's done. Maybe Mozzie's POV?
